X-59 Takes to the Skies

NASA and Lockheed Martin achieved a milestone in aviation history with the the first flight of the X‑59 QueSST. This one-of-a-kind experimental jet aims to fly supersonic without the disruptive sonic boom — instead creating a much quieter “thump.” On its inaugural sortie over California, the aircraft safely lifted off and completed its systems checks, validating years of meticulous design and ground testing. The significance goes beyond mere speed: by reducing noise to acceptable levels, the X-59 could pave the way for commercial supersonic flights over land, shortening travel times and reshaping how we cross continents. With this first flight in the books, the real work begins – gathering data, fine-tuning systems and compelling regulators to rethink the boundaries of flight.
