The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) published two videos on its RACER program. RACER stands for Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency — the name of a project for unmanned off-road vehicles.
Why this is interesting is because off-roading is far more unpredictable than self-driving on roads. While there have been several tests of the competitor projects in the program, this particular video offers a cockpit view of the RACER vehicles. One of the objectives of the program, according to DARPA, is to create an algorithm set that can cater to universally to different types of off-load vehicles.
According to the DARPA TV description, “Using the algorithms on a two very different platform helps RACER toward its goal of platform agnostic autonomy of combat-scale vehicles in complex, mission-relevant off-road environments that are significantly more unpredictable than on-road conditions.”
Another video displayed the autonomous capabilities of its 12-ton RACER Heavy Platform (RHP). The teams competing in the program include the University of Washington and Overland AI; and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Offroad Autonomy, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Duality Robotics.
