Swedish defence company, Saab, published an eight-part series of videos on the theme Shielding the Baltic Sea, shortly after the Nordic country became the latest member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The series examines the challenges and effort required in securing the various domains of potential conflict in the Baltic Sea, including land, airspace, surface, sub-surface and harbours. These security challenges are particularly significant given the war in Ukraine, the destruction of the Nordstream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea, increasing incidents of GPS-jamming and GPS-denial, and Sweden shedding neutrality with its entry into NATO.
It is also worth remembering the limited access to the sea accorded to NATO’s main adversary, Russia. In the west, Russia’s access to the sea is mainly through the Black Sea (with the Straits of Bosporus and Dardanelles controlled by NATO member, Turkey) and the Baltic Sea (surrounded by eight NATO countries).
Not to mention, the recent reports of the presence of Chinese vessels in the Baltic Sea.
The takes a detailed deep dive into the specific characteristics of each of the domains and the peculiar challenges they present to NATO armed forces in the Baltic.
